A Disappointing Grammys

Beyonce wins big but Styles gets Album of the Year

The Grammys were complete with performances, speeches, and fashion. In contrast, passive-aggressive reactions and discourse between the fans of the artists nominated and those who won dominated social media. Some of the wins were well-deserved, and some weren’t.

Though there were many different aspects within the award show, what it lacked was art. The main purpose of its creation was lost in the mess of popularity competitions. Junior Jayde Diresto commented, “I thought it was a great show. I just thought that a couple of artists were extremely disrespectful, especially to album of the year winner [Harry Styles]”.

In addition, when the song of the year award was announced, it was surprising to hear the winner was Bonnie Raitt’s “Just Like That.” The song’s win was quite a shock due to the fact that Raitt hadn’t even been on the Billboard top 100 since 1995. In addition, freshman Loiola Payas Gomez-Arrue said, “No, I have never heard it in my life,” when asked if she had ever heard the song of the year before. It seems that not only is the artist not well-known, the song isn’t either.

Though many did not enjoy the actual awards, Sophia Wagner-Sprinkle commented that she enjoyed the fashion modeled by the attendees. “Somebody wore a yellow Vivienne Westwood dress that was absolutely amazing.” Despite this, the Grammys seemed to be lacking overall. All that can be done now is to wait for next year and hope for a more enjoyable Grammys.
