Police in Australia are currently investigating allegations made by Ruby Rose, an Australian actress, against pop star Katy Perry, following claims that date back nearly two decades. According to a statement released on April 15, Victoria Police confirmed that detectives from its Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team are looking into a reported “historical sexual assault” that is said to have occurred in Melbourne in 2010. Authorities stated that the incident allegedly took place at a licensed venue called Spice Market nightclub in the city’s central business district. Because the case is still active, officials have said they cannot share further details at this time.
The investigation follows a series of social media posts made by Rose on April 12, where she publicly accused Katy Perry of assaulting her at a Melbourne nightclub when she was in her early 20s. Now 40, Rose wrote that it took her years to come forward, referencing the long-term impact that trauma can have. She also stated that she planned to report the incident to police, later confirming that she had done so. In response, a representative for Perry denied the allegations, calling them “categorically false” and describing them as “reckless.” The statement also referenced Rose’s past public claims against others, which have previously been disputed.
Under the laws in the Australian state of Victoria, there is no statute of limitations for reporting sexual offenses, meaning cases can be investigated regardless of how much time has passed.
As of now, the situation remains under investigation, and no charges have been announced.
