Baseball season is back in full swing! A lot has changed since our favorite MLB team finished their somewhat disappointing season last fall. With the Padres not even making it to the playoffs last season, the Padres’ starting roster changed quite a bit and they also got a new manager. Bob Melvin, a former professional baseball player and coach, is now the new manager and looking to have a successful season here in San Diego. He has signed a three-year contract and will hopefully lead the Padres to success. One key starter that is missing from the lineup this season is Fernando Tatis Jr. who fractured his left wrist and got placed on the 60-Day Injured List. Tatis carried the Padres last season with 42 home runs last season and had 135 hits in 130 games. Harrison Martin, a junior baseball player said, “I am disappointed that Tatis is injured until at least June, but in the meantime, I am excited to watch C.J. Abrams play.” Martin discussed Abrams making his MLB debut with the Padres playing shortstop. Some other key players include Manny Macahdo and Will Myers. The Padres Opening Day at Petco Park is on Thursday, Apr. 14 and many people are excited to watch. Junior Ashlyn Brunette is excited to watch her favorite team. “My family and I love to watch the Padres together, especially Tatis and Myers.” The first pitch of the home opener is scheduled for 5:10 p.m. against the reigning World Series Champions, the Atlanta Braves.
