When Rory McIlroy, a one-time champ who has made a spectacular comeback, consolidated an already legendary list of top-tier golfers, he did this in two consecutive Masters tournaments at Augusta National. Trapped two strokes away from losing the final round, McIlroy topped the tournament with a 12 under 276 and finished just under world number one Scottie Scheffler by only one stroke to secure the 90th Masters tournament from April 9-12. McIlroy didn’t go off without a hit; he began Sunday’s round two strokes behind, even though he made awesome birdies on holes 12 and 10th hole at the Augusta National course 13 in the heart of Amen Corner. He had a chance to make a crucial bogey that might have put him in the lead; however, he missed that opportunity and ended up one over par in the final. For McIlroy, a very rare addition to an elite group of just three golfers, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods, who have won multiple Masters titles in a row, his victory is truly extraordinary. When asked if he thought Rory McIlroy could be considered the best golfer of our generation, sophomore Christian Reynoso Spurrier said, “I think he is the best player in a while, and if he can win more tournaments, I think he might be in the conversation for the best golf player.” Rory McIlroy secured his sixth major championship title with a guaranteed check of $4.5 million from an unprecedented collective bank of $22.5 million. Senior Haiden Uhrig was asked his opinion on this year’s golf masters and said, “I’m glad that McIlroy won because I’ve been a McIlroy fan for a while and he’s Irish.” Next April, he will try to become the first golfer to win three Masters titles in a row.
