Eight children tragically were killed in Shreveport Shooting, two more fatally wounded. On the morning of Sunday, April 19th, a devastating shooting took place in Shreveport, Louisiana that left 8 children dead and two women fatally injured in what the police have deemed a “domestic incident”. At around 5:55 am, police received a call about a disturbance at a home on 79th street, with the caller reporting that everyone inside the house had been shot. Upon arrival, Police discovered the horrific scene of eight children dead, ranging from the ages of 3-11, with seven of the victims being the suspect’s own children. Officials believe that most of the children passed away in their sleep, and one child was even found dead on the roof of the house. One woman in the house who had been shot in the face was later identified as the wife of the suspect. Additionally at 6:07am, a gunshot was also heard from another house near Harrison Avenue where the suspect also visited to shoot a woman who was allegedly his girlfriend. Both women survived but currently suffer critical injuries. The suspect attempted to flee via carjacking but was later cornered and killed in a police confrontation. Authorities identified the shooter as Shamar Elkins, the father of the children and a former member of the Louisiana Army national guard who reportedly had a criminal history that should have prevented him from legally owning guns. Family members of the suspect claim that he was struggling with mental health and marital problems. The tragedy has sparked strong reactions, particularly among students regarding gun laws and gun purchasing. Christian Reynoso-Spurrier, a sophomore at La Jolla High, stated that he believes “It’s an argument for why there should be stricter gun laws.” and sophomore Alexander Allport concurred, remarking how “It should be almost impossible for people to get guns, especially if they have proven mental health conditions… I believe you should go through a more rigorous process before getting guns.”
