In a surprise press conference at the White House, First Lady Melania Trump spoke out about the notorious sex-trafficker and predator Jeffrey Epstein, who has remained a major topic in the media because of the number of high-profile celebrities linked to him. Ms. Trump addressed supposed allegations, some of which were made about her being linked to the convicted abuser and human trafficker. In her speech, the first lady called on Congress to hold public hearings for the victims of Jeffrey Epstein to give them the opportunity to share their stories.

Mrs. Trump also heavily denied having had any connection to Jeffrey Epstein, but some have viewed the abrupt and unprompted announcement with skepticism. Angela Shen, a sophomore, stated, “ I think people should be held accountable if they are guilty”, adding, “It’s kind of doubtful she wasn’t part of Epstein’s case, especially considering how close Trump was to Epstein.” Another student, junior Sara Kamahi, shared a similar reaction, commenting, “I never expected some celebrities to be on the list, and it makes me question how many secrets celebrities keep from the public.” 

The case has revealed how people in positions of power can sometimes avoid accountability for long periods of time. Reports also indicate how difficult it has been for victims to receive justice. As more information continues to arise, many people are closely watching how the case is handled and whether justice will truly be served.
