A paragliding accident on April 19 at Torrey Pines Gliders Port, led to an instructor and a student being injured and stuck above Black’s Beach. This event happened on Sunday afternoon. One victim was airlifted, while the other was thankfully brought to safety by a rope system. The lifeguards were the first ones on scene before the firefighting crew arrived after 2:30. This rescue required a helicopter for one of the victims, and the other was hoisted onto an ambulance. Both ended up in the hospitals. Their conditions have not yet been released at the time of writing this article.
This isn’t the first time paragliding accidents have appeared in Torrey Pines Gliders Port. A fatal collision just 7 years ago on March 9, 2019, led to two paragliders crashing down on a cliff right above Black’s Beach. Paragliding is one of the most dangerous sports, with a mortality rate of about 1.4 per 100,000 flights. Steven Magee said, “The problem with paragliding is when it goes wrong, it tends to go fatally wrong,” explaining that there’s no room for error when the wind decides whether you live or die.
Torrey Pines has regulations on how paragliding should be conducted. For example, paragliders are required to have a license, and it’s specified how experienced they need to be to fly. However, Alex Allport, a sophomore, said, “The accident could’ve been prevented if they had more safety measures. If it isn’t easy to control paragliding, then they should limit the number of people in the air.” Alex makes the point that more safety regulations are needed for paragliding, but Torrey Pines allows for self-regulation. So, learning from past accidents, safety regulations should be discussed moving forward.
