On March 2, Hezbollah, a terrorist organization located in Lebanon, conducted a series of strikes against Israel in retaliation for the joint Israel-US assassination of Ali Khamenei, the former Supreme Leader of Iran. Most of these strikes targeted the city of Haifa, but one that was intended for a military base near the city of Ramle struck a daycare instead, injuring 14. Additionally, a different missile landed on a satellite station, injuring two. Israel has retaliated by striking Hezbollah command bases centered in southern Beirut and southern Lebanon. Among the strikes, the IDF killed the commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, Ali Karaki, along with other high-ranking officers. These attacks had a significant effect on the local civilian populations, with around 600 dead according to the Lebanese government. When sophomore Christian Reynoso Spurrier was asked his opinion on the situation, he said, “If Hezbollah is attacking Israel, they obviously have a right to defend themselves, that’s what militaries are for.” The situation is complicated, and some people think we should help the civilians. Such is the case for Alexander Allport, a sophomore, stating, “While I think it’s good that they are retaliating against a terrorist organisation, I also think that we should provide humanitarian care if possible.” This is only the latest act of violence in the turbulent history between Israel and various countries in the Middle East.
