The girls’ water polo varsity team makes a big splash in the Division Two girls’ championship! The championship match was held on February 28 at Long Beach City College against La Serna High School. The Vikings entered the championship with confidence after winning their previous games. Head coach Tom Atwell has always emphasized success both in and out of the pool for his players. The final game was a competitive and tight match from the start. The score remained close early in the match until Team Captain Stella Tezcan scored multiple key goals, helping put the Vikings ahead. Once La Jolla regained the lead, the team began to build up momentum, resulting in a huge turning point in the game. Initially, they were not expecting such a physically aggressive team. The intensity of the match was heightened, leading to heated moments between players in the water. Junior Avery Edstrom on the team says, “It was a really exciting season. I’m very grateful to end the season with a win, but it’s sad to see our four seniors go. This sport is something I’ve always enjoyed and found fun. I have very supportive coaches”. Coach Atwell is optimistic about the team’s future despite the graduating seniors saying, “We have a very strong junior class and a big freshman group. We have a lot of depth in the entire team, even after the seniors left. We will need to fill in some key positions like goalie, but the plan is to work really hard to develop better skills so we can win again next year!”
