The boys’ varsity soccer team finished an amazing season and won the CIF soccer tournament for the first time in 10 years. This season, the team has been hauling to the finish line. The season had its struggles, but the team persevered with amazing resilience. On February 24, the team played an incredibly tough match against Montgomery High and won 1-0. The team has beaten a decade of CIF losses and brought home the score for La Jolla this year. The team’s incredible season is thanks to the players’ determination and the leadership of the coaches and two team captains, senior Julian Zavala and Thilo Hoelscher. “We started off strong, winning our pre-season tournament. During the season, we had a lot of ups and downs with the loss of a coach. It was pretty difficult, but our team was able to bounce back, and we won CIF. Overall, it was a great season, and I was happy to win CIF,” says Zavala. Following a tough loss post-CIF, sophomore player Baptiste Ferton said, “Yesterday we played in states, where we unfortunately lost 3-1. But we were all happy because we won CIF, so we weren’t really disappointed. We had a really great season, and there was a lot of team chemistry.”
