In the 2026 Winter Olympics, both the U.S.A. men’s and women’s ice hockey teams brought home gold medals. However, shortly after their victory, the United States men’s ice hockey team became the center of controversy over a phone conversation with President Donald Trump.
While celebrating in their locker room, the team received a call from the president, who congratulated them on their win and invited them to attend the State of the Union address. During the conversation, Trump joked that he would “have to” invite the women’s team and said that he would “probably be impeached” if he did not. The men’s team’s players erupted in laughter.
Sophomore Maya Askim said, “I thought the comment came off as unnecessary and kind of disrespectful, especially since both teams achieved the same thing.”
The comment and the team’s response quickly received backlash online. Some viewers argue that it was a light-hearted remark. On social media, supporters of the president interpreted the comment as a joke. However, others argue that the remark came across as minimizing the women’s team’s accomplishments since they had also won a gold medal. Some felt the comment was insensitive and sounded like a mockery of the women’s win.
Sophomore Angela Shen said, “It’s weird, especially because the women’s team has won more medals than the men’s.” Despite differing opinions, the incident has sparked discussions about sports and politics, turning the situation into a national debate.
