Since January 20, 2025, there have been 27 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shootings that have taken place across the US. One case widely discussed took place in Minneapolis on January 7, when an ICE agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in her car. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claims the shooting occurred after protesters were blocking ICE agents from returning to their headquarters to “start a new operation.” Seconds before shots were fired, after agents ordered her to exit her vehicle. Good can be seen on video turning her car’s wheels away from where the ICE agent is standing. When asked what he thought should be done with the agents involved in shootings, 9th grader Brayden Itlong said, “I feel like, honestly, even if we do try to do something, something’s going to happen where they don’t get punished.” Kristi Noem described Renee Good’s actions as an act of “domestic terrorism,” claiming that the officer acted in self-defense.
A survey held by Quinnipiac University found 53% of Americans believe that Renee Good’s death was not justified. When asked whether she thought these shootings would affect public opinion on Donald Trump, freshman Sunshine Schultz said, “People will be seeing that this is happening because of him, ICE is getting worse because of him, and ICE is harming innocent people because of him.”
Additionally, Alex Pretti, a nurse, was fatally shot by ICE agents on January 24th while shielding a woman being pepper sprayed. Claims made by Kristi Noem, Director of Homeland Security, that Pretti intended to commit “maximum damage” and domestic terrorism have been discredited by videos showing Pretti filming officers before being thrown to the ground. The handgun Pretti had on his person, which he had a license to cary and never drew, was taken by officers before he was shot in the back 10 times in less than 5 seconds.
Minnesota and Illinois officials have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration in response to recent escalations in ICE deployment. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has told Minnesota that it will lead the investigation into Renee Good’s shooting without state involvement. Minnesota government officials pushed for a joint investigation, Governor Tim Walz asking the federal government to “leave Minnesota alone.” Only time will tell how the investigation is held.
