As of November 12, the Government Shutdown has been resolved. However, over the 43 days it was active, transportation, healthcare, and public safety were severely affected. Over the Veterans Day weekend alone, USA Today wrote, “…1.2 million passengers were delayed or had their flights cancelled due to air traffic controller absences, according to Reuters”. The shutdown started due to the Senate Democrats blocking a Republican led funding bill that would not extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. Eventually, Democrats signed the bill they had initially vetoed, and Trump signed it to end the government shutdown. Six Democrats in the House and seven in the Senate voted in favor of the shutdown. Many students have stated that they don’t know what the Government Shutdown is, nor understand its purpose. Freshman Oscar Macdonald stated, “I think the government shutdown is unnecessary and un-called for as there isn’t a point other than Trump not getting what he wants. It’s not fair that the whole US has to be put in a major halt just because the president isn’t getting what he wants.”
