The Louvre, the world’s largest and most visited art museum, located in Paris, France, was robbed on October 19, 2025. This heist has gone viral across the internet due to the Louvre’s international fame and the shocking fact that the heist successfully defied the museum’s security measures. Students who were asked about this robbery had already heard about it from videos all over the internet. Such is the case for Sebastian Lee, a junior, who said, “I have heard about the Louvre heist online and have seen many TikTok videos about it. The robbers likely drew inspiration from the Netflix show Lupin, which tells the story of a thief who also targets the Louvre. This robbery is very shocking and I don’t think it will ever happen again, especially because they will have more security after what has happened”.
According to the BBC, $102 million worth of valuable jewels was stolen from the Galerie d’Apollon, the room housing France’s Crown Jewels. The thieves were described as experienced and having a well-prepared plan to flee on two scooters. There are currently around 60 investigators working on the case, and recently, charges have been filed against four suspects, whose DNA was found at the crime scene. Despite these accusations, the precious jewels are still missing. Domino Ashby, a sophomore at LJHS, who has been to the Louvre before, said, “I have heard about the heist, one of the thieves dropped the crown when they were trying to escape. They also stole many expensive jewels. I think the Louvre should definitely increase its security so this does not happen again”. he crown that was dropped was the main imperial crown of Empress Eugénie and fell during the thieves’ escape, causing it to break and making a gash in the culture and history of France. This heist, especially since the last Louvre robbery was almost 30 years ago, has sent shockwaves across the globe due to its damage to French culture and the incompetence of the Louvre to protect its art.
