Two teenagers who attend Palomar High School, a fifteen-year-old, Kane Roland, and a seventeen-year-old, Elias Yanez, were shot and killed at a Halloween party in Chula Vista late Halloween night. The shooting occurred near Castle Park High School on East Prospect Street at 11:17 pm. They were initially found injured and brought to the UC San Diego Medical Center, where they were later declared dead. The suspect who opened fire was 18-year-old David Garcia. There is no publicly confirmed motive; however, police statements say an argument broke out during the party before the shooting began. Witnesses say there were multiple confrontations involving Garcia and others earlier that night. According to prosecutors, Garcia had brought a gun to the party, and once the argument escalated, he fired into the crowd. Detectives have not yet released evidence of premeditated murder or whether Garcia shot at random. Senior Jayden Vallin, says, “I hope their families are with them and that they rest in peace”. Garcia was arrested by the Chula Vista Police Department, and pleaded not guilty. Elias Yanez’s mother says he planned to enlist in the military after graduation, and that, sadly, the world will not get to know what he could have accomplished. She says he was very stubborn, but in a way that made you respect his opinions. She says he shone on the basketball court and was her ticket to the NBA. Kane Roland’s mother also feels devastated about the tragic death of her son. She says she feels empty inside and still does not believe that he is gone. One woman who also went to the party said she saw it all and tried to save one of the victims. She says the image of the boy when she turned him over keeps replaying in her mind. Sophomore Josiah Meza says, “I knew those boys. I went to middle school with one of them, and I miss them”. The deaths of Elias Yanez and Kane Roldan have left a lasting mark on the Chula Vista community. As friends and families mourn, their memories serve as a reminder of how someone’s life can end at any given moment, and how one person can change so many lives forever.
