The New York City Marathon is organized by the nonprofit organization New York Road Runners. The run was first held in 1970 in Central Park. This year, over 59,000 people from around the world participated in the marathon, setting a new world record as the largest number of participants to complete a marathon. The run took place on November 2, with the course starting from Staten Island and ending in Manhattan. People across the world came together to rise to this challenge. Freshman Brandon Gomez said, “I think it’s a good way for people to stay fit and to be able to show off your accomplishments.”
One of these accomplishments included a new record time for this marathon. Helen Obiri completed the race in two hours and nineteen minutes, breaking the women’s course record. Her achievement brought excitement to the race and demonstrated the talent of the athletes completing this course.
This marathon inspires people across the world to come to New York. Sophomore and Varsity track athlete Alia Pulli said, “The beautiful city makes for a perfect marathon destination. As a runner, I want to participate in the marathon when I’m older.” While many participants completed the race, the event also created a lively atmosphere that brought people together to cheer for the runners. Throughout the day, over 2 million spectators came to support the participants. The New York City marathon is a wonderful event that pauses city dwellers’ busy lives to celebrate athleticism and unity.
