People had been discussing the Kansas City Chiefs possibly winning Super Bowl LIX and getting the first-ever Super Bowl three-peat. However, on February 9th, 2025, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Chiefs by a landslide with a final score of 22-40. The Eagles started strong, with a 7-0 lead. Only in the third quarter did the Chiefs get on the scoreboard with a touchdown, but they failed to get the two-point conversion.
Throughout the entire game, Philadelphia’s defense put on a show. According to ESPN, Mahomes was sacked six times, the most of his career, and the Eagles did it without ever calling a blitz. Junior Drake Weise agrees, saying, “It was mainly the Eagles’ d-line. They had their best season.” On the other hand, Chiefs fans are wondering what went wrong on their part. BBC News has some answers, reporting that Mahomes’ “…decision-making was off. He was too quick to take off and run, perhaps understandably given how his offensive line was being manhandled.”
Some people did not have a strong opinion on who they wanted to win but still enjoyed the Super Bowl overall. A writer for The University Daily Kansan comments on Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show, explaining that it was “…entwined with symbolism about the American government and control.” The show included backup dancers in red, white, and blue. SZA, Samuel L. Jackson dressed as Uncle Sam and tennis star Serena Williams made special appearances throughout the performance. Freshman Irune Payas Gomez-Arrue says, “I didn’t really care who won. I was excited to see Kendrick’s performance, and I think it was good.”
