Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
This Wes Anderson Fall classic is equally funny as it is thematically deep. Starring George Clooney, Meryl Streep, and Jason Schwartzman, this film’s stacked cast delivers great performances embodied by gorgeous stop-motion animation. Best paired with apple cider and foggy weather.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
A hilarious take on the classic zombie apocalypse, this Edgar Wright movie is the perfect combination of light horror and pitch-black comedy. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost own their roles in a way that makes the viewer realize that the true horror may not be zombies, and is instead a day spent in England.
Ash vs. Evil Dead (2015-2018)
With a chainsaw-hand and vendetta against the demonic Deadites, Ash (Bruce Campbell) delivers one-liners and gore in this spinoff series of the Sam Raimi classic. With three seasons of bloody fun, Ash vs. Evil Dead is a bingeable horror delight.

The Penguin (2024)
Following the events of Matt Reeve’s The Batman, this spinoff series is an interesting take on the classic DC Comics villain. Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti give memorable performances in this Emmy-hopeful show. Watch new episodes of The Penguin every Sunday on Max.

Max Davis is the Arts and Entertainment editor for the Hi-Tide and a senior at La Jolla High School. After guest writing for the paper last year, contributing movie and theater reviews as well as covering the film industry during the strikes, Max gained valuable experience in how the paper is put together and run effectively. Now, Max is excited to join the Hi-Tide staff and continue sharing cultural insights both within the school and beyond. In his free time, he enjoys watching films and reading. He is interested in writing film and theater criticism as well as doing award season coverage and predictions. Additionally, he hopes his work will encourage others to support local stage and film theaters, in addition to engaging with the arts at school.

Zac Schmidt is thrilled to join the Hi-Tide’s staff as the Opinions Editor for his senior year. While this is his first year on the staff, his passion for English and writing has fueled him to help run the Creative Writing Club and launch a school-wide writing competition. In his free time, he enjoys playing guitar, creative writing in short stories and poetry, and reading classic novels. He hopes to give a voice to students and prompt change within the LJHS community (along with exposing its dark secrets) through the opinions page.
