The Leaked Music Epidemic

Unreleased versions of songs by artists Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, SZA, and Lady Gaga have surfaced on music streaming services and the worldwide web. Nowadays, an album is rarely released without any songs leaked beforehand. Songs usually get leaked a week or up to a month in advance by a hacker hacking into the artist’s email. Two days ahead of Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated 11th album, the Tortured Poet’s Department release, snippets of 17 songs on the album were shared on social media.

After teasing music via social media, Billie Eilish released the cover and title of her album in an Instagram post. Shortly after her announcement, Rolling Stone published the track list, which reportedly consisted of 10 songs, including “Skinny” and “Birds of a Feather.” After Rolling Stone reportedly leaked the track names, Eilish “blasted” the magazine for releasing confidential information and exposing the tracks on her new album “Hit Me Hard and Soft” by calling them out on social media. Unreleased Billie Eilish’s tracks “True Blue” and “Ken,” allegedly recorded in 2019, were also leaked recently. On March 20, 2024, Eilish’s brother FINNEAS claimed the leak was “fake” in a TikTok comment section. However, this was debunked by leakers who obtained the original file of the song.

Songs from SZA’s long-awaited album, “Lana,” were also leaked recently, prompting the artist to remake her entire album from scratch. SZA responded to questions about the leaks with, “I’ll be starting ‘Lana’ from scratch. Do not ask me about it again.” The singer announced on social media that due to three songs leaking, she will release them and others as a deluxe album and continuation of the Grammy award-winning “SOS.” Freshman Emma Omar said, “I mean if Sza didn’t release it for a reason, people who published it without consent are just weird.”
