The Jewel in Netflix’s Crown

Since the highly anticipated first part of the Crown’s 6th season bounded onto the world stage on November 16th, it has dominated the charts and living rooms across the world with its understated elegance and profound intensity that is delivered in every scene. From the empowering scenes of Princess Diana walking amongst land mines, to the heart-wrenching screams bellowed by the then Prince of Wales as he learns of her death, you feel as if you are in the palaces and cars and meeting rooms throughout the show, throwing you into a wave of inspiration and agony all at the same time.

Despite the brilliance of the first half of this season, details have been left out that seem so essential to the characters, that it is unbelievable. Events such as the attempted kidnapping of Princess Anne, riots in Northern Ireland and the IRA, and the passed vote in Scotland and Wales to decentralize power in parliament from London. Although these incidents would have made great additions to the plot of the show, the writers and crew were able to squeeze an enormous amount of detail into the four released episodes, which would be a crime not to applaud. From the magnificent costume and clever quips, to the tone the lines were delivered in and the incredible resemblance the actors possess to their real-life counterparts, there is not much to complain about after watching any of the episodes. One such line was spoken by Princess Diana, explaining, “He said to me every survivor has a date of the day they stepped on the landmine. He said, ‘Mine was December 16, 1963’. I said, ‘Mine was 29 July, 1981 — my wedding day’.” As earned and deserved, the 73 million people who tuned in to watch the Crown since it began are surely eager for part 2 of the season to be released on December 16th, but until then, the world will simply have to watch and wait.
