The La Jolla High Winter Formal, also known as the ASB Ball, is set to occur on March 18, 2022, at the Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park. Due to the lingering Covid-19 cases, the school board decided that students will not be allowed to bring students from other schools to LJHS’s dance.

This will be the first LJHS ASB Ball since January 2020, a few months before the San Diego Unified School District shut down all schools and remained online until fall 2021. Most students are thrilled to have the opportunity to have school dances again, however, it’s concerning that outsiders are not allowed to participate, especially for the students who have a date from another school.

As spring approaches, Covid-19 continues to become less threatening as symptoms are far less mild, especially for high school students/teenagers. Many students are tired of going to school with heavy restrictions and just look forward to when life will go back to normal. However, SDUSD is still concerned about the spread of the virus which is why school is still not the same as it was before the Covid-19 pandemic.

I think this new Covid-19 restriction is extremely unnecessary considering the current status of the pandemic. Non-LJHS students should be permitted to attend the ASB dance this year like they have been in years past.

When students were asked their opinions on the new ASB Ball guest rules, sophomore Rowan Clark stated, “LJHS allowed outside guests to homecoming, and this mask mandate is likely to be lifted soon so it seems kinda weird the rules changed.” This past fall at homecoming, La Jolla High allowed non-LJHS students to attend the dance, however, the upcoming ASB Ball is planned to be held indoors which is why there are different restrictions. Ultimately, students are going to be in close contact at any school dance despite restrictions. All we all hope is for life to go back to what it once was. Vocalizing her concern, senior Leila Lauman said, “I think this new Covid-19 restriction is extremely unnecessary considering the current status of the pandemic. Non-LJHS students should be permitted to attend the ASB dance this year like they have been in years past.”
