At La Jolla High School, a potential switch to full time block schedule could be occurring which has sparked mixed reactions among students. The proposed change would alter the normal six period day to longer and fewer classes periods. While some are open to the idea, students like 11th grader, Anya Rastogi are concerned with the amount of academic pressure it could pose, “I think that would be a horrific idea because we have AP testing, and so being able to cram everything into one semester is not fair” Highlighting the difficulty this schedule could bring with course material, making it harder for students to prepare for crucial exams. On the other hand, some students stated that it depends on the type of classes you have, “Well, my schedule’s good, so I wouldn’t mind, but if y’all have a bad schedule, then it wouldn’t be that good. Like if it was your junior year or something?” Says Naliyah Galvez, a 12th grader. Her response highlights how the change could affect students differently depending on their classes. Supporters of block schedule say that it could be more beneficial due to more in depth learning and less homework. However, critics argue that it could make it harder for students to focus during the extended class period, and the work they would miss due to an absence. As the discussion grows, administrators are considering the effects on students before changing the course for good. For now, the future of schedules is unclear but students opinions are playing a key role in determining the outcome.
