On April 16, LJHS held its annual art fair to display the hard work of Ms. Cox’s art students throughout the year. It was held in the library and included not only painted pieces but also featured sculptures created in Mr. Ferguson’s class. This art fair was a powerful outlet for students to express themselves through work that would otherwise have stayed in the classroom.
Celeste Peters, contributed multiple art pieces including her self-portrait, labeled “Sucker.” She explained, “This piece is meant to represent how it feels when it seems that everything, even yourself, is against you. I wanted the perspective of this work to make it ambiguous as to interpret who is throwing the punch, whether that is the viewer, the subject, or some unknown figure.” Celeste’s portrait was relatable and realistic, a good example of how this fair helps students relate to each other through artwork.
“Phoenix” by freshman Liam Glenister was created to share the artist’s feelings about his first year of high school. Liam explained,“It’s a symbol of rebirth because when I entered high school this year, I felt like I was reborn and could be a new person. I used watercolor and ink for it, and it took me about 5 days to finish.”
Sophomore Sophia Meyer also contributed to the art exhibit, this time with a woodworking piece. She describes her piece as “capturing the movement and distance between the viewer and the horse’s tail. I used layered wood to create the movement of the tail, choosing different grains for contrast.” Her art was a beautiful display of her love for horses in a creative way rarely seen before.
