Every year, La Jolla Kiwanis holds a swim at the cove. This year its September 7, 2025 marking the 109th year of this open swim tradition! Since its beginning, in 1916, the La Jolla Cove Swim has grown from a race with only seven swimmers to a philanthropic event that attracts hundreds of participants. The La Jolla Cove Swim promotes athleticism and raises funds for children’s charities, making it a vital part of San Diego’s culture.
This event is a historical tradition in La Jolla. It has only been cancelled three times. The first time being in 1948 because of a polio scare. Another cancellation happened in 1959 due shark sightings, and only one man showed courage to complete the swim. The most recent cancellation in 2020 was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This shows the event’s commitment and participation.
During the weekend after Labor Day, participants compete for cash prizes. Everyone who finishes the race gets a medal and a t- shirt. This race is not only exciting to watch, but is also a fundraiser event! The American Diabetes Association and San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation participate as sponsors. When asked how she felt about the event Sophomore Domino Ashby said, “I’ve never participated in the swim, but I’ve heard of it and it sounds fun!”. While the swim has grown in popularity, it is important to spread awareness so it can grow further. The event helps San Diegans come together to celebrate La Jolla cove and support an event that raises money for good causes every year.
