La Jolla High clubs are now officially established and open to new membership. This year’s club day featured various tables filling the quad, hoping for new members to join. Though club day has been criticized for its lateness, being hosted by ASB on September 27th, the event helps students find their likings and personal interests within the school community. Joining a club is a reasonably straightforward process as students typically only provide a name and email, allowing anyone to join any club without needing previous experience. Sophomore Lily Kamalil, President of the Unhoused Service Club, said, “I created this club to help the people who are less fortunate and give people an opportunity to see things from their perspective instead of judging them.” Senior Elena Farrar is a member of a club involved with San Diegan food banks. Elena said, “I’m doing this club because I’m volunteering at one of the food banks in San Diego. I joined this club because I feel like I’m helping my community by packaging food for the underprivileged and the ones who need it.” Joining clubs can help students discover new interests they can apply outside their school career. When asked why she joined the Faith Club, Senior Carmen Jativa said, “I joined this club because I grew up catholic and then kinda lost my faith because I just stopped going to church, but in middle school, my friends started going to a youth group, and I joined. The same church that hosts the youth group that I go to. They also give pizza every week, so it’s cool.” Club Day 2024 was a successful and helpful event for those involved. Clubs expanded their membership, and students expanded their involvement with their school community.
