If you’ve walked the halls of Muirlands Middle School in the last 16 years, chances are you know Mrs. Cox. Now, she’s back in a familiar but new setting, bringing her uniqueness and creativity to our high school’s art department.
Last year, Mrs. Cox was named California Middle School Art Teacher of the Year! She’ll receive her award at the State Conference in November as she starts this new chapter with us. Former and current student Rose Felicio-Weber said, “She is a very wonderful teacher… very understanding and encouraging, which is great to have in a teacher.” Rose, who had Mrs. Cox in the seventh grade and is now in AP Art 5-6, says, “It’s definitely taken a higher level of understanding. I was just really surprised to see her here, and it’s great to have her back.” When asked about her career path to become an art teacher, Mrs. Cox said, “I started out wanting to be a sociologist, but I eventually realized I loved art and wanted to work with people every day.” Mrs. Cox was inspired by her grandfather, a teacher, principal, and artist. “He was my soulmate in a way… we saw the world in similar ways.” With over 22 years of experience, Mrs. Cox has taught everything from black and white photography to 3D design and ceramics. She spent 16 years at Muirlands, where she became a beloved teacher. “I loved it there, but after 16 years, I wanted something new. I realized I loved working with older kids, and it’s just a little less intense,” she said. Mrs. Cox loves her new classroom, even though it needs some special touches to feel like home. She says, “It’s got a gallery vibe, but I wish we had windows and AC…maybe some plants, too!” She’s all about finding balance in her teaching, giving students creative freedom but with enough structure to keep things clear. Her passion for art, her students, and her creative approach to teaching are already making a difference in our art department. As Felicio-Weber says, “It’s great to have her back.”
