Winter Season Loading…

The fall sports season at La Jolla High School is drawing to a close, meaning it is time for fresh new winter sports! Some winter season activities include boys basketball, girls soccer, and co-ed wrestling.

As of writing this article, many of the sports have just started the process of tryouts. For some, this can be daunting; having to show your skills in front of the coach in order to make a certain team is very stressful. “Tryouts are as difficult as you make them…if you keep a high hea, then it’ll be more fun,” provides Heidi Weiss, a junior on the girls soccer team. Tryouts for basketball and girls water polo have started; however, not for girls soccer. Sam Cousino, a current sophomore who made Varsity last year as goalkeeper, says she thinks that the team “is going to do pretty good this year” and looks forward to seeing her teammates and coaches at tryouts.

In the past years, winter sports have shown their success in many ways. For example, the girls water polo team won the D2 CIF championships last year. The current seniors who were on varsity last year have learned a lot coming off that success. Besides water polo, girls soccer moved up a division last year, something that takes a lot of effort to achieve. Similarly, wrestling also moved up a division, which means that they have to play stronger teams they have not played before.

Many students are looking forward to the new season, and are very hopeful for the outcomes of their games. Weiss says she is “really excited to bring some rings to La Jolla.” Indeed, that is what La Jolla hopes all its winter sports will bring.
