Local Tragedy
Around 9 a.m. on Apr. 11, a body was found dead on Ocean Beach by San Diego Life-Gaurds. His body, though not yet identified, is presumed to be in relation to a panga boat incident that occured on Sunday morning. A panga boat is a modest sized boat that can be used for different activities such as cruising and fishing. On Sunday morning the boat capsized near Ocean Beach Pier, three men were found and taken to the hospital for related injuries and a fourth was found dead. Junior Marlie Crivello said, “The risk of capsizing in a boat is not always the largest, but it is definitely a fear of mine.” Authorities believe that there may have been 10 people on the boat and rescuers looked for hours to find any other persons that may have been related to the accident and in need of help. Five of the ten passengers on the boat are believed to have gotten away. Authorities believe that the boat incident was an attempt at illegally smuggling Mexican citizens over to the US.
The man’s body has been taken into possession by the local Medical Examiners Office, they will conduct an investigation to find out how the man died and his identity. Sophomore Joshua Henry said, “If I were to find a body on the beach I would probably be in shock and my first instinct would be to check that the body was real.” This incident is shocking and saddening to all, authorities continue their search for answers in this case.
