With the emergence of the Omicron Variant, the CDC is further recommending the booster shot for vaccinated adults. The Omicron Variant has the highest transmission rate yet, with 50 mutations across its genome, in comparison to the Delta Variant, which only has 20. Major countries all over the world have confirmed cases of the Omicron Variant. There are currently 47 million adults in the US who are not yet vaccinated according to the CDC. They are encouraged by the CDC to get the vaccine for themselves and their family. Previously the recommended age for the booster shot was adults 50 years, now the CDC is saying that its recommendation should apply to everyone 18 years or older. Sam Cisneros, English teacher at La Jolla High said, “I feel like whoever feels like getting it should get it. I plan on getting it. Vaccination is a good thing and will protect the masses.” The Omicron Variant has one confirmed case in the United States but healthcare professionals will be keeping an eye out for more.

The best way to prevent the spread along with the booster is by continuing to wear masks and take all of the necessary health precautions. “I think that if you are vaccinated you should get the booster shot as an extra precaution,” said junior Marlie Crivello. Although the current vaccine will most likely be less effective against the variant, the booster remains highly recommended by the CDC. There is no reason to panic but precautions must be taken.
