Schools in the United States have started changing the type of electives that are being taught. In the past, LJHS has taught classes that focused on giving students day to day skills. These classes include: autoshop, home ec, culinary arts and different types of language
classes such as French and German. A lot of students at LJHS think that some of the electives we have in our school are too similar to each other. Drake Weise, a senior at LJHS said, “I feel like some of them could be combined into one class like Multimedia and Computer science, classes like ceramics and art”. In LJHS we should have more electives that are different both for teaching the student body how to live on their own and for the students to be more enthusiastic about going to school each day. When asked, most students have requested specifically for cooking and home ec classes. Anika Odom, a senior, states, “If we had classes that are more outside education classes like cooking it would be better for the students.” Even though LJHS has a lot of interesting electives like Comp Sci, AP Psychology, Art History and Multimedia, these classes don’t offer students help regarding college and how to live alone. Classes like Cooking, Home Ec and even Autoshop could help students thrive, become more independent and self sustaining.
