Another year with almost no school spirit. During the homecoming spirit week, students were told to dress up to different themes, the funniest being barbeque dad versus soccer mom. Every year, La Jolla High ASB hosts events such as homecoming, fundraisers and activities in the quad to bring school spirit. However, the teachers take it more seriously than the kids!
This years homecoming theme was Rio, but after focusing the whole dance theme on it there was not a single blow up bird or even a festive tropical tree in sight. Seriously, no wonder nobody wanted to go. Students complained that nobody dressed up like the theme and that homecoming was, well..disappointing. Other schools, such as Mission Bay, hosted homecoming at an exciting venue with lights and tasty food. La Jolla’s homecoming was hosted on the sweaty softball field with a few light up tables and stale brownies. Unfortunately, it’s universally acknowledged by students that the school spirit at La Jolla High is depressing, and almost nonexistent. Students were disappointed at the lack of effort put into hosting homecoming, and almost nobody followed the theme. Alana Sweeney, freshman, says “ The school spirit is very low. I mean, I guess I go to football games, but not always. The football games are boring.” Football games are supposed to attract the most school spirit, with a new theme each time, like neon colors or blackouts. However, most students say they go for fun and hangouts with friends, and most leave after one hour because it gets “boring.” The students at LJHS should strive to have more school spirit, this will allow a more fun-filled and entertaining school year.
