The San Diego Padres’ playoff run ended Tuesday night with a 5-3 loss against the Chicago Cubs at Petco Park. Sophomore Elise Moreau said, “I was surprised they lost, and I thought they got out of the playoffs so soon“. The Padres’ season ended with a tough loss that knocked them out of the playoffs, disappointing fans who had hoped for a deep playoff run.
After a rocky start to the season, the Padres had built strong momentum heading into the postseason, but the Cubs’ pitching shut down their offense. The Cubs pitcher, Marcus Stroman, struck out seven batters in six innings, while Padres pitcher Yu Darvish gave up four runs before being pulled out in the fifth inning.
It’s the second straight year that the Padres’ season has ended in disappointment, following last year’s playoff loss to the Dodgers. Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill said, “This one hurts. I thought last year hurt. But this one hurts. Tight-knit group, a bunch of grinders. We had injuries left and right, still putting up a fight. It just didn’t go our way”.
Padre fans across La Jolla High were very upset with the results, therapist Colleen McAdams stated, “All my friends were rooting for the Cubs, but I was going for the Padres, and I was bummed they lost“. Even though they lost, many fans are hopeful for next season. With talented players like Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, the Padres have the chance to have a strong season coming up.
