On Wednesday, October 1st, the LJHS varsity field hockey team faced off against Bishops on The Bishop’s School field. Bishops won, the game ending with a final score of Bishops 4, La Jolla 1.
This game marks the varsity field hockey team’s first loss of their previously undefeated fall season. When 12th-grade team captain Leyla Yazici was asked how she felt about the game, she stated, “I think it was definitely a rough game for us. But hopefully we can learn from it, and then use what we learned about our team and the other team during the game, for games in the future.” The last varsity field hockey game that La Jolla played against Bishops was last season’s CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) championship, which La Jolla High lost with a score of Bishops 2, La Jolla 0. Senior team captain, Lilly Ferrari, commented on how last season’s CIF championship affected the game against Bishops, “I feel like for me it’s a mental battle, I feel like for a lot of the other players it’s a mental battle.”
When asked how she thinks the rest of the season will go, she said, “We’re still building, and we haven’t reached our peak yet because it’s still the middle of the season. So, I think we’re doing pretty well.” Only time will tell how the rest of the season plays out.
