Professional tennis player Carlos Alcaraz won the 2025 US Open against Jannik Sinner in a 2-hour and 45-minute match, securing his sixth major title in his career. This win not only showed his consistency at the top level but also furthered building his reputation as possibly the “next face of tennis”, following tennis legends such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. The final kept many fans on the edge of their seats. Both Alacrez and Sinner showed incredible athleticism and endurance, doing baseline rallies and powerful serves.
The match was close from the beginning. Students at La Jolla shared their reactions to the intensity of the game. Henry Hagey, a junior on the varsity tennis team, showed his support for Alacrez’s win, saying, “It was pretty cool, I think he deserved it, and it was a good match,”. Students were also asked if they expected Alcarez’s win. Hagey added, “ I think his hair made him win,” remarking about his recent haircut before the US Open. Others focused on how the match compared with the rest of the tournament: “No, I don’t think this was the best match of the tournament; the women’s side was much more entertaining,” Sophomore Liesel Park pointed out, highlighting how much attention the women’s tennis has been receiving recently.
Still, most students agreed that Alacrez’s victory would have a lasting impact. Freshman varsity tennis player Alanna Sweeney stated, “Yes, I think after this win he is going to be number 1 again,” stating that after Sinner’s loss, “he’ll probably work harder.” In the end, the US Open impressed many people with its skilled players.
