One of the most valued parts of the day for students worldwide is the hiatus they get in between their intense classes – lunchtime. Almost every student spends their school day looking forward to the break but the critical question is whether lunchtime is long enough for students to properly recharge after class and feel ready for their next one. Is the ratio of lunchtime to class time fair? The majority of LJHS students have come to the same consensus- no. They believe a more extended lunchtime is essential for their well-being and performance in class.
Kella Hambrick, a sophomore, argues, “I think we should have at least 45 minutes of lunchtime because students will perform better in their classes if they have a longer time to relax.” Students not only spend lunch with friends and eating, but this is also a valuable time for them to take tests, go to clubs, or even work on homework. Sophomore Evan Slaughter has a similar reply to the question: “I need more time at lunch because as a sophomore, my classes are feeling harder and I really appreciate the little breaks and lunchtimes I get in between them.”
Not all students feel the same, though. Joseph Crudo, junior, counters, “Lunch is long enough. I have enough time to eat my food.”
This 30-minute lunchtime system has been in place for some time, but according to LJHS students, the time is insufficient for completing tasks or simply relaxing with friends between classes.
