Ryan Segura, a fourth-year religion teacher and head track and field coach at Saint Augustine High School, was found distributing explicit child videos, along with using non-sexual photos of his students and discussing them in an erotic manner. A search warrant for a Denver man charged with similar crimes linked a phone number used to send explicit child videos to Segura, prompting the house warrant on August 14 and subsequent arrest. Segura has admitted to the distribution of explicit child videos across state lines, discussing non-sexual photos of his students, in a sexual manner, and meeting with someone who he believed to be 18 but was actually 16 for sexual activities.
In court, according to NBC, assistant U.S. attorney Amanda Griffith stated that Segura, “has breached the promise that he had with the students of the school by violating their trust”. Segura was denied bail after being deemed “a danger to the community” by the prosecution in federal court.
Since the incident, multiple saintsmen have refused to speak on the issue; however, the official Saint Augustine High School website released an official statement that they were “cooperating fully with the authorities.” The charges against Segura hold a minimum of five years in federal prison with a maximum of 20 years. Little statements or updates have been released from the ongoing case, but Segura’s next hearing is set to take place on September 9th.
