A hit-and-run incident involving a reckless driver resulted in serious injuries to a Torrey Pines High School student on August 22. Following a Torrey Pines football game, the girl and five of her friends were headed to a shopping mall near their school. The footage of the crash shows the six girls crossing the street as the car suddenly accelerates. Though the girls tried to run away, the car managed to strike the teen in the back of the group.
Madi Danko, a junior at Torrey Pines, spoke on the situation, “I feel really bad for her, and she doesn’t deserve this, and I hope people take this seriously because some kids at school thought it was funny.”
NBC 7 states that the girl was soon rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a concussion. Witnesses and friends of the victim believe that the driver was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and was purposefully trying to scare the teens by speeding towards them, but this has yet to be confirmed. As of today, the suspect is not in custody but could face a hit-and-run charge and possibly jail time up to 6 months. ABC 10 reports that the parents of the victim recently spoke about the situation and said that this incident has dramatically impacted their family. Their daughter cannot lead the same life she did before the accident and has had to drop out of one of her AP classes and quit flag football.
“Life has changed since last Friday. It’s very hard to think anything like that could happen,” says the victim’s mother.
