American Eagle has been facing controversy after their recent collaboration with Sydney Sweeney promoting their new jeans clothing line, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans”. Although the ads were successful, bringing in a 25% rise to the EAO stocks, some members of the public have been pressuring American Eagle due to the nature of the ad. During the ad, Sydney Sweeney said, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.” This had many saying that the ad promoted eugenics and racism. Some students at LJHS have different opinions about this situation, when asked how the slogan “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” made them feel, senior Uriel Lopez said, “I think they managed to do it in a covered way, like she has good genetics, and good jeans.” While other people such as senior Hunter Wood said, “They’re oversexualizing genes, with trendy pop stars and actors.” When asked if having Sydney Sweeney as a representative for American Eagle is more appealing, junior Marina Gracia said, “That doesn’t make me want to buy them more but it might appeal more to guys.” As a response to the drama American Eagle’s official Instagram account has deleted the post/video and came out with a statement saying, “is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look great on everyone.”
