La Jolla High School’s Airband competition occurred during lunch on Wednesday, April 9th. Airband featured members of the Asian Culture Club, the Dance Club, and one participant from Inspire Health Club. All were fighting to win the top spot.
Senior Maya Hanoch from the Inspire Health Club performed an outstanding rap solo. The performance was very well done; she made a clear point about how people should go outside, enjoy the environment, and take time out of their day to enjoy nature, enabling them to receive health benefits like natural dopamine. Maya Hanoch said, “I loved spreading a positive message, and it was pretty cool looking out at the dark crowd with the bright lights in my face. Sorta pop star vibes!” Many people loved the performance; once she finished, she received a big round of applause from the crowd. She ended up placing second out of the three performances.
Following the solo was the Dance Club. They did many dances to popular songs over the last couple of decades. The routines were very well put together with the lights and dancers’ outfits. All of the dances had very smooth transitions and there was a great mix of teamwork and individual skill within the routine. The Dance Club ended up placing last in the competition. Freshman Phoenix Kane, an attendee at the performance, said, “It was cool to see all the special talents; they were unique and interesting.”
Lastly, the Asian Culture Club put on a great performance showcasing Asian Heritage and culture through dances, props, and songs. All the dancers did well with staying with the rhythm, and the choreography was excellent. The Asian Culture Club did so well they ended up winning the competition. This year, the La Jolla High Airband did not disappoint!
