After more than a decade of speculation and delays, A Minecraft Movie finally arrived in theaters on April 4, 2025. First announced in 2019 with an initial 2022 release date, the film endured several reschedules before reaching the big screen. Featuring a cast of Hollywood stars including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen, the long-awaited adaptation has already sparked a wave of internet memes and audience reactions.
Freshman Teddy Wainio shared his thoughts, saying, “I thought the movie was pretty good. Although it wasn’t a masterpiece, it was able to keep me, and the rest of the theater, entertained for the duration of the runtime, which is ultimately what the movie was meant to do.”
The story follows four real-world characters each struggling with their own challenges before being pulled into the blocky universe of Minecraft. There, they meet Steve, a seasoned crafter, who helps them protect the overworld from the villainous Malgosha, a piglin sorceress determined to destroy creativity across both Minecraft and the real world.
Although the film has resonated with audiences for its energy and humor, critics have responded less enthusiastically. A Minecraft Movie currently holds a 47% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6/10 rating on IMDb. Some fans expressed disappointment with the film’s direction, noting that large portions of the story take place outside the familiar Minecraft setting.
“I think they should have stayed true to the game more; the real-world stuff was kind of pointless,” said freshman Seb Jones. “The casting was great, but the plot needs to be redone; it was horrible.”
Despite the mixed reviews, the film’s theatrical release has energized the fanbase, with moments of cheering and applause during key scenes becoming a phenomenon on social media.
