Tragedy struck when Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, died of a stroke and a cardiac arrest. The news comes as a shock to many, despite the Pope suffering numerous health problems. On Easter Sunday, the Pope made a public appearance, suggesting his recuperation was going well. However, the following Monday, the Vatican released a statement confirming his passing.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, in Argentina, Francis was the first Latin American Pope. Elected in 2013, Francis was known for his more progressive policies in comparison to Popes before him, and was thought of by many as a sign of change and reform for the Catholic Church.
Numerous people across the globe mourned Francis’ death, including Javier Mileli, President of Francis’ native Argentina, who clashed with Francis in the past, offered his condolences, saying “…having been able to know him in his goodness and wisdom was a true honor for me.”
Francis wished to be buried in Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major, rather than St. Peter’s Basilica which is tradition. He also asked to be entombed in a simple wooden casket, symbolizing his connection with the common people. After his funeral, the Church will undergo a conclave to decide Francis’ successor.
