According to the Ukraine Support Tracker of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the United States has spent €114.15 billion on financial, military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine between January 24, 2022 and December 31, 2024, exceeding European aid by €65.21 billion. However, the government now seems to be siding with the Russians. During the first months of his second term, President Trump referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a dictator, while praising Russian President Vladimir Putin, and even accused Ukraine of causing the war. “This doesn’t even make sense!” said junior Linda Oleata. “It’s like saying that Mexico invaded the US. Why would they have done that?”. The United States further betrayed Ukraine and Western Europe by voting alongside Russia, North Korea and their allies against the UN’s condemnation of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Presidents Trump and Zelenskyy held a controversial bilateral meeting in the Oval Office on February 28. Despite a relatively respectful beginning, the encounter turned truly aggressive towards the end, when President Trump and Vice president Vance verbally attacked the war hero for not expressing his gratitude to them. Several journalists were also deeply disrespectful, interrupting him, and even asking him why he wasn’t wearing a suit.
This betrayal affects not only Ukraine but also the European nations relying on American support for their security. As French Senator Claude Malhuret explained in his viral speech, the United States is sending a message of unreliability to its allies, destroying its own diplomatic reputation. “Europe can no longer rely on U.S. protection. France’s offer to extend its nuclear umbrella to Germany and the rest of Europe presents the most viable solution,” stated Michael Witt, Professor of International Business and Strategy at King’s Business School.
