Pope Francis is the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He was elected the 266th Pope on March 13th 2013. Recently, the Pope has been dealing with numerous health issues. Pope Francis had a part of his lung removed in his early 20s in his home country of Argentina when he developed a severe respiratory infection. This health issue has lingered with him for his whole life. Recently, Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 with respiratory problems that degenerated into double pneumonia. The Pope suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency. Acute respiratory insufficiency is a serious lung condition that happens when your body has trouble exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide. La Jolla High Freshman Ellery Riney says “It’s sad to see the Pope in this condition. I can’t imagine what his family and followers are going through.”
The Vatican has stated “The mucus was his body’s reaction to the original pneumonia infection and not a new infection; the given laboratory tests appear to not indicate any new bacteria.” The Pope is on noninvasive mechanical ventilation. The Vatican has stated that the Pope has remained alert, oriented and has cooperated with medical personnel. Despite the Pope’s health challenges, the Pope’s spirit remains resilient, inspiring his followers hope among his followers.’ La Jolla High Freshman, Charlie Wilkinson says “The Pope’s health concerns are very concerning to me. I hope he gets better soon.” Further, Wilkinson notes that in most of the surrounding area of Vatican City and Italy, many are people expressing prayers and support for him while also reflecting on his vulnerability and mortality. The Pope’s health concerns are also leading people to discuss the future of the Church and the importance of unity during this time of uncertainty. Hopefully, the Pope can make a healthy recovery and remain able to keep leading the Roman Catholic church efficiently and effectively.
