At this year’s Golden Globes, Zendaya appeared in an orange Louis Vuitton dress, but attention quickly shifted to a small object on her left ring finger. Many online were quick to notice what appeared to be an engagement ring, sparking a wave of speculation and tabloid scrutiny.
Their relationship, born through appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming together, has historically been private. In 2017, People magazine reported that the couple had started dating while filming the movie. The last time Zendaya acknowledged Holland on her Instagram in the form of a post was in June 2022 to celebrate his birthday.
Thus, as expected, despite all the engagement rumors after Zendaya’s Golden Globe red carpet appearance, the couple has not confirmed anything. When asked about this topic, freshman Lily Bodor said, “They probably want to keep their relationship to themselves and make it more special.”
Still, in the absence of official acknowledgment by the couple, other sources have confirmed the engagement between them. TMZ first published an article only one day after the Golden Globes on January 6 confirming that the two were engaged by “sources close to the couple.” Additionally, Dominic Holland, Tom’s father, confirmed the engagement in a blog post for his Patreon January 10. “He had purchased a ring. He had spoken with her father and gained permission to propose to his daughter. Tom had everything planned out… When, where, how, what to say, what to wear” Dominic wrote.
Holland and Zendaya’s privacy is refreshing in a current online culture that rewards oversharing. In that sense, the couple’s ability to remain silent is almost incomprehensible. They are arguably the biggest movie stars of Generation Z, and their union marks a significant cultural moment considering how invested the public has been in their relationship since Spider-Man. When asked about the couple and their potential engagement, LJHS sophomore Mitra Mahmoudi said, “I think it’s true. They’ve been together a long time, so it isn’t like it’s too much of a big surprise.”
