Major League Baseball star, Juan Soto, has agreed to sign a 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets. This is considered the largest signing amount in sports history. Soto was the youngest player to be drafted in the MLB, his first contract being with the Washington Nationals at 19 years old with a $1.5 million signing bonus. While with the Nationals, Soto contributed to their World Series win in 2019.
Soto previously played with the San Diego Padres in 2023, then was traded to the New York Yankees. He played for the Yankees for one year, making it to the 2024 World Series. After his contract concluded, there was much speculation over which team he would sign with and ultimately, he decided to sign a 15-year contract with their rivals, the Mets. Junior Sophie Hassan, said, “I think Soto signing with the New York Mets was a good decision because he is a great outfielder,” Sophie added, “He would be a good addition to the Mets.”
Many Yankees fans are furious with Juan Soto for abandoning the Yankees, others such as junior Haleh Maheronnaghsh said, “It is interesting that he chose the Mets over the Yankees since they are cross-town rivals.” She also went on to say how this signing would be beneficial to both the team and Soto’s career. As Juan Soto’s baseball career continues, he remains a symbol of inspiration to young baseball players around the world with his irreplaceable talent in MLB.
