LA Galaxy are back on top of Major League Soccer after a decade, winning their sixth MLS Cup and extending their record of most MLS Cup victories. The MLS Cup Final took place at Galaxy’s sold-out home stadium, Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, on December 7, 2024, against the New York Red Bulls.
Galaxy has made big improvements from their 2023 season, where they began with their worst start in club history and placed 13th in the Western Conference. Going into the 2024 playoffs, Galaxy was second in the Western Conference and the Red Bulls were seventh in the Eastern Conference. Senior Angel Solano said, “Galaxy had a very disappointing 2023 season, but they’ve made an incredible comeback.” This MLS Cup Final marked Galaxy’s 10th appearance as a finalist and the Red Bulls’ second.
In the MLS Cup Final, Galaxy started the game strong with two goals in the first 13 minutes by Joseph Painstil and Dejan Joveljic. The Red Bulls scored one goal by Sean Nealis in the 28th minute, but it was not enough. At the end of the match, Galaxy hoisted the trophy for the sixth time in the club’s history. Senior Kailani Santana Peralta said, “It’s great to see the Cup return to such a historic team, especially after the rough few years they’ve had.”
This championship win marked Galaxy’s first since 2014 and with this victory, Galaxy continues their reign as the most successful team in MLS history. They were the first team to achieve five MLS Cup wins and they are now the first to achieve six. Mark Delgado, a midfielder for Galaxy, said, “I accomplished a childhood dream. Now I get the sixth star for this amazing club.”
