The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in this year’s widely anticipated World Series on October 30th. The Yankees, despite holding the most wins in MLB history, under-performed in their first Series since 2009. Since they last dueled in 1981, the teams would end up playing five games, with the Dodgers winning the series four games to one with a Game 5 score of 7-6.
The Dodgers were ecstatic about the win, with MVP Freddie Freeman hitting a walk-off grand slam in Game 1- the first such in World Series history. LA pitcher Walker Buehler pitched a perfect ninth inning that resulted in the Dodgers’ series-clinching save. “I don’t think you would want to be any other organization than us,” Buehler said. “There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.” The Yankees’ performance, by contrast, was widely criticized by their fans, with their subpar defense resulting in them only winning Game 4. “It was the worst exhibition I’ve ever seen on how to not play the game,” said Greg Kinsel, an LJHS math teacher and Yankees fan. “The Dodgers simply outplayed them.”
Senior Max Chen was more apathetic about the results. “I know a lot of people who love both teams.” Chen said. “If they’re happy, I’m happy.” It seems despite a landmark victory for the Dodgers, claiming their eighth series title, the Yankees have a variety of work to do if they’re going to attempt to take the crown in baseball’s most important championship.
