The nominees for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony were released early Friday morning and were met with an expected spirited response from those online. The year’s ceremony is scheduled for February 2, 2025, in Los Angeles at the Crypto.com Arena.
Beyoncé received the most nominations this year with a cool 11 nods. This year, the Song of the Year category represented a broad range of music. The nominees included “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey, “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish, “Die With a Smile” by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, “Fortnight” by Taylor Swift featuring Post Malone, “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan, “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, “Please Please Please” by Sabrina Carpenter, and “Texas Hold ‘Em” by Beyoncé. LJHS freshman Giselle Stanley joked, “I wish they included some alternative songs, such as ‘Creep’ by Radiohead.” Their comment, though humorous, reflects longstanding criticisms of the Recording Academy—mainly that the Grammys only nominate mainstream, radio-friendly music over alternative or boundary-pushing work. This sentiment is indeed reflected in the Song of the Year category, which leans heavily on chart-topping singles.
Over in Album of the Year, the nominees are more eclectic, including André 3000’s New Blue Sun, Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft, Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet, Jacob Collier’s Djesse Vol. 4, Charli XCX’s Brat, and of course Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department.
LJHS sophomore Sarina Weiss said, “I am surprised that CHROMAKOPIA by Tyler, The Creator isn’t on the list.” However, this exclusion reflects the eligibility period, with albums only recognized if they were released between September 16, 2023, and August 30, 2024. Overall, though they always spark contention, Grammy nominations can be significant moments in an artist’s career. The Recording Academy aims to celebrate the successes of our cultural giants and that is indeed accomplished with this year’s nominees.
