On October 27, fans of actor Timothée Chalamet gathered in Washington Square Park for the first-ever Timothée Chalamet look-alike contest, organized by Anthony Po, a Jersey City YouTuber. The event celebrated the actor’s unique style and huge fanbase, especially among young people. Contestants were judged on how well they resembled Chalamet’s look, with many copying his famous messy curls and dressing as his iconic film characters—most notably his portrayal of Willy Wonka in the 2023 film Wonka. To everyone’s surprise, the real Chalamet made an appearance but was apparently no match for the winner, 21-year-old Miles Mitchell, who took home $50 and a six-foot trophy. The event brought a large crowd, with police intervening in what the NYPD later described as an “unscheduled demonstration.”
When asked, “What makes someone iconic enough to inspire a look-alike contest?” senior Natalie Healey said, “I think Timothée Chalamet is a good example of this because he is beloved by many different groups of people, especially young people.” She added, “A figure like Timothée, I wouldn’t be surprised why he would inspire a look-alike contest.”
Senior Jessica Siry shared her thoughts on Chalamet, saying, “I think he is a very genuine actor. He’s just been himself since day one with his theater days. I feel like he always held that character up, and throughout his riles, he never disappointed ever.”
Chalamet’s contest has since inspired more look-alike events, including one for Gladiator II actor Paul Mescal in Dublin on November 7, a Harry Styles contest in London on November 9, and a Slumdog Millionaire actor Dev Patel contest in San Francisco on November 10.
