As the beautiful sunset rose, La Jolla High seniors sat atop Mount Soledad, partaking in the annual Senior Sunrise organized by ASB. Seniors gathered to celebrate this tradition on Friday, September 6, 2024. The Senior Sunrise is a tradition that began over a decade ago and is celebrated at many schools across the country. It typically takes place at the start of the school year to kick off the seniors’ final year together. When asked if she was satisfied with the event this year, Senior Class President Stella Lee said, “Honestly, yeah, I thought there were a lot of people there; it was exciting to see a bunch of seniors coming together and watching the sunrise together,” although she said, “I guess the promotion was done kind of at the last minute, I could have started that a little bit earlier, other than that I thought that everything else went well.” When asked the same, Senior Ava Siry said, “My least favorite part is I feel like it wasn’t well coordinated, and everyone was kind of separated into their own groups.” Other students were also let down by unmet promises. Senior Jorge Estrada said, “People said there was going to be coffee and donuts provided, but there was nothing there for us.” Overall, students hope ASB would have focused more on details to create a better experience for everyone. Despite a few setbacks, Senior Sunrise was a success with a great turnout. Senior Remko Kevorkian said the event’s highlight was “spending quality time with my friends.” At the same time, Senior Ava Siry shared a similar experience, saying, “my favorite part of Senior Sunrise was being with my friends and taking pictures to create memories.” Senior Sunrise 2024 brought seniors together, giving them a special moment to kick off their final year in high school together. Hopefully, the enjoyable tradition will continue next year.
